1950's
1952 - First monarch event broadcasted on tv - the funeral of King George V
1953 - Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, first time in history that television had more of a audience then radio.
1954 - First Daily TV news programme
- Television Act 1954
1955 - ITV starts broadcasting
1958- ITV screens the Arm Chair Theatre which represents the real working class in contrast to the BBC’s more conventional plays.

1960's
1965 - Vietnam war becomes first to be televised
1966 - England win world cup

1970's
1973: Watergate Scandal
1974: Nixon resigns as president
1977: Roots (Programme about the slavery of African Americans – Historical dramas of this type defined the ‘70s)

1980's
1980: Women Cops : Shows on BBC1 and ITV showing taking proper notice of female cops (women have been policewoman since 1949)

1997 : Queer as folk – (CH4 drama about 4 gay men living together- first to deal exclusively with gay storylines
